Business debt advice may be in demand after a new report revealed retailers are seeing a slowdown in sales growth.

According to the British Retail Consortium (BRC), like-for-like sales of 1.2 per cent were recorded in June 2010.

However, the latest figures showed that this dropped to 0.5 per cent last month.

The BRC said this slowdown was particularly apparent in the homewares sector, as concerns over employment and income prospects led to consumers spending less on major items.

Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC, said people are focusing on essential items only, particularly as they are unsettled by talk of cuts in public spending.

"The benefit from sunny weather receded as it turned cooler and wetter in parts of the country, while the World Cup boost ended," he continued.

Despite this, Mr Robertson noted that consumers are more confident than they were at this time last year.

This comes after Justin Sargent of Nielson described the level of concern about jobs and money among the public as "concerning".
