Marketing 'a top concern' for small engineering firms

Date Added: 18/05/2011

Marketing is one of the top concerns for small businesses operating in the engineering sector, according to newly-published research by the Forum of Private Business.

In a poll, it found that more than a quarter of the companies that responded are worried about their sales and marketing strategy.

Credit control was also named as a major issue, with many firms pointing out they spend a lot of time chasing up late payments.

Forum chief executive Phil Orford said: "Getting sales and marketing right is crucial for small engineering companies - especially as they are acknowledged as one of the main sectors to lead the country to a sustainable private sector recovery."

He added that for many business owners in the engineering industry, marketing is not one of the skills they have.

Peter Ibbetson, chairman of small business at NatWest, recently stated that impressing clients is one of the best cheap marketing methods, as it means they are likely to recommend a firm to others.
