Holidays to disrupt small businesses

Date Added: 20/04/2011

Smaller businesses could be set to struggle this month as a result of the two long holiday weekends.

The Easter weekend is late this year and the following weekend will see employees all over the country an extra day off as the royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton has been declared a public holiday.

But despite this, the latest research from BDRC Continental suggests that companies are upbeat about their prospects.

However, nearly half of respondents to a poll by the organisation admitted there will be some disruption to their plans due to the two long weekends occurring back-to-back.

Vicky Whiting, associate director at BDRC Continental, noted that the two holidays are likely to give a lift to employees, therefore benefiting small firms.

She said: "It is the larger businesses, with more staff and a higher turnover that expect the holiday weekends to be disruptive to their business."

This comes after the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and KPMG revealed in a report that retailers struggled in March 2011.
