The government has been told by the Home Builders Federation (HBF) to help small construction firms which require business debt advice to create apprenticeships.

Steve Turner, head of communications at the HBF, stated that it is important the coalition comes up with a way to ensure the British workforce has the skills it needs.

"If the government is serious about increasing housing supply, we have got to ensure that we have got the skills required in the future to do that," he said.

Mr Turner added that a "very challenging agenda" is on the cards for small businesses requiring company debt advice, because of the issues raised by the move towards a low-carbon economy.

He pointed out that the recession and the economic downturn led to firms letting employees go and reducing their apprenticeship programmes.

The comments come shortly after the latest Markit/CIPS Construction Purchasing Managers' Index showed that growth in the industry has slowed for the third month in succession.
