FSB: Localism Bill must consider needs of small firms

Date Added: 13/05/2011

The Localism Bill needs to consider the needs of smaller businesses if it is to be a success.

This is according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), which stated that the proposal is currently ignoring the importance companies have on the economy.

John Walker, national chairman of the FSB, explained that there are still a lot of issues with the bill that will need to be addressed before it can become law.

"We are disappointed that the bill doesn't currently recognise the importance of local businesses within the local community - it will be these businesses that will be key to strengthening the economic recovery," he said.

Mr Walker added that local business owners need to be allowed to join forums that would discuss planning applications, whereas at the moment the bill suggests this will not be the case, with only residents permitted to sign up.

Phil McCabe, spokesman for the Forum of Private Business, recently stated that banks do not have the local knowledge to make the right lending decisions.
