Firms 'can boost productivity through flexible working'

Date Added: 07/06/2011

Firms have been urged to consider allowing their employees to work flexibly, as this can boost productivity compared to making them stay in the office.

Peter Thomson, director of research at the Telework Association, stated there are clear financial benefits to be earned from flexible working, such as letting members of staff do their jobs from home.

He pointed out that a lot of companies now operate at "24/7 extended hours for their customers, so you need your employees to be more flexible and able to get the service to customers at a time the customer wants to be served".

Mr Thomson highlighted the fact that offices can be noisy if they are open-plan, which may lead to some people preferring to work in the comfort of their own homes.

Transport secretary Philip Hammond recently suggested that the government should work to increase flexible working in London, as this could help to reduce congestion when the Olympic Games are held in the city next summer.
