Firms facing financial constraints and seeking business debt advice as a result may still benefit from investing in their staff.

According to the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), 50 per cent of employees believe they can do their job better than their manager.

This, it said, is because firms in the UK invest far less in the training and development of management than companies in other European nations.

The CMI has therefore insisted that more must be invested in areas such as leadership, as this will make staff happier and more content.

Mike Petrook, head of public affairs at the group, added that there is a "large disconnect" between workers and their bosses in other areas as well.

"Are they getting what they want from their place of work [and] is the workplace getting what they want from the employee?" he commented.

Despite this, a recent study by the CMI found that two-thirds of employees do believe they are treated fairly by their managers.
