SMEs preparing for Small Business Saturday

Date Added: 27/11/2013

Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the country will be hoping to get a boost with the Small Business Saturday initiative that is taking place next month.

The event is being held on December 7th and will see members of the public encouraged to make the most of their local businesses - and with the day having been set in the middle of the busy Christmas shopping season, hopes are high it will be a success.

But what do SME owners have to do to take part in this year's Small Business Saturday?

Firms can sign up to receive a special pack on the Small Business Saturday website, which will provide them with all the information they need to get set for the big day.

Companies must also be prepared for a busier day, so it might be worth investing in more stock than usual as customer levels are likely to be higher than a normal December weekend.

Many local councils are also doing their bit to help Small Business Saturday to be a big success, with more than 25 authorities announcing they will offer free parking on the day.

The Forum of Private Business is among the bodies organising the inaugural Small Business Saturday and chief executive Phil Orford says free parking offers a "proven" benefit to SMEs.

He said: "Parking charges discourage many consumers from shopping on the high street, diminishing small businesses' customer base. The Forum believes removing these charges will help generate the conditions needed to make Small Business Saturday UK a great success."

Small Business Saturday will be the culmination of a long campaign the Forum of Private Business has been involved in to encourage communities to shop local.

Mr Orford added that the organisation has been in contact with local authorities that are yet to announce they will allow free parking for this year's Small Business Saturday.

Making the most of the initiative could help those firms in financial difficulties to turn around their fortunes, as attracting and keeping new customers will be crucial to building a brighter future.
