Private school enters liquidation

Date Added: 23/08/2013

A private girls school in Denbighshire has confirmed it is closing down as a result of it being placed into liquidation, leaving parents to admit they feel let down.

Howells School is closing its doors due to financial issues following a meeting of its creditors that took place earlier in the month.

The school has also been told that it must pay almost £34,000 compensation to teacher Rebecca Raven, who lost her job when she become pregnant.

According to a report by the Daily Post, parents were told via email that the school is going to be closing down and they will have to place their children elsewhere.

Trustee Nicola Locke explained "financial uncertainty" is the reason for the closure of the school, noting that it faces an "unaffordable" payout in the near future. Former headteacher Bernie Routledge and his partner Helen Price have also won tribunals against the school in recent months and will be paid a "substantial sum".

Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) Cymru director Philip Dixon stated that he is concerned by the closure of the school, although a Denbighshire council spokeswoman noted the local authority will be able to find places for the girls affected.

Alan Coleman, insolvency practitioner for RPG, said: We have been called in. There was a meeting of creditors on Wednesday evening. Now it's a question of realising the assets of which we do not think there is very much." The school company was originally named Howell's 2000, but this was changed to H2000 earlier in the year.

Howells School was officially a charity and many bodies of this type have found life hard in the last few years due to the recession and its after-effects.

In June this year, the Joshua Foundation announced via its Twitter account that it was closing with immediate effect as a result of its financial issues. "We have today instructed insolvency practitioners and the office is now closed. All emails, phones etc have ceased and the website is down," the body said in a message posted on the social networking site.
