Government strategy 'could help small firms succeed globally'

Date Added: 12/05/2011

A new government strategy could allow small businesses to have the opportunity to succeed globally.

Lord Digby Jones, a former minister of state for UK Trade & Investment and ex-director general of the Confederation of British Industry, stated that the tax regime in the UK is "unhelpful", which could put overseas companies off from investing.

He said: "The strategy is about: 'How do you get a small business sitting in Birmingham or Manchester or Leeds or Newcastle trading around the world and delivering what at the moment is about 126,000 jobs?'"

Lord Jones claimed that the support being offered to small businesses by the government is helping to put around £6 billion back into the UK economy.

He was speaking to Dominic Laurie, presenter at the BBC's Wake Up to Money show, for a podcast titled the Government's Action Plan To Help UK plc.

A new report from American Express FX International Payments recently claimed British firms are missing out on billions through not trading internationally.
