Firms receiving business debt advice may be among those to suffer if the default retirement age is abolished, experts have suggested.

According to the Forum of Private Business (FPB), such a move could be "highly damaging" to thousands of small enterprises across the country.

Indeed, the business group warned that some firms could be crippled by the move, because it will jeopardise their ability to plan for the future.

Chris Gorman, spokesman for the FPB, acknowledged that many older people are able to work beyond the age of 65 and make use of their skills and experience.

However, he said some whose abilities have deteriorated may be unwilling to leave voluntarily.

"There will eventually come a time when the needs of the business will have to be considered," Mr Gorman commented.

According to employment relations minister Edward Davey, scrapping the default retirement age will help to end age discrimination and give individuals more choice.
