Firms reminded of rules regarding images on websites

Date Added: 03/06/2011

Small businesses have been reminded that they need to have permission to use images on their websites or they risk being forced to make payments.

The Forum of Private Business revealed that it has seen a rise in calls from firms that have received demands for money after they have published copyrighted images.

Chief executive Phil Orford stated that Getty - a picture agency - has been in touch with a number of companies asking for cash because photographs have been used without a license.

He said: "The digital age has blurred the boundaries of image copyright in many people's minds ... some business owners mistakenly think that because an image is freely available on the internet, it can be reused without permission."

Mr Orford pointed out that firms that get in a web design company to look after their online presence still need to make sure the images being used are not copyrighted.

Spencer Parker, group product manager for unified web, data and email content security provider Websense, recently noted that more firms are using social media marketing.
