Firms taking company debt advice could be losing out on as much as £3,000 a year, a new study has found.

A report by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has discovered that two-thirds of companies have been victims of crime, with an average cost of £2,900 to their balance sheets.

The report - which is titled Localism and tackling crimes against business - also found that a quarter of bosses do not think the police would be interested in investigating crimes against them.

Mike Cherry, policy chairman at the FSB, described small businesses as the heart of local communities.

He said: "A crime against a small firm is not just an attack against that business but it affects staff and has repercussions on the wider community."

The FSB recently claimed that companies requiring business debt advice are keen to go green but need support in order to be able to do so.
