Business debt advice may be required after experts warned the cost of eco-friendly technology could push smaller firms into the red.

According to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), small to medium-sized enterprises can play a "huge part" in the UK's fight against climate change.

However, the organisation noted that many cannot afford the upfront cost of low-carbon systems.

The FSB has therefore called on the coalition government to take steps to ensure going green is financially viable.

John Walker, national chairman of the FSB, said the need to reduce carbon emissions, as well as the likely increase in energy costs over the next decade, means that moving to a low carbon economy "is more of an economic imperative than ever."

He added that if the correct policies are implemented straight away, SMEs will be able to "significantly" reduce carbon emissions and help to boost the UK economy at the same time.

This comes after the FSB described the level of confidence among small businesses as "fragile".
