CBI: Manufacturers see strong rising demand

Date Added: 04/05/2011

Smaller companies operating in the manufacturing sector could be experiencing a strong demand for their goods at the moment.

The Confederation of British Industry's (CBI) latest quarterly SME Trends Survey indicated that volumes of domestic and export orders among smaller firms are growing at a quicker rate than at any point in the last 15 years.

Lucy Armstrong, chair of the CBI's small to medium-sized enterprise council, stated that a robust growth in production is being underpinned by the figures.

"Headcount has increased for the third consecutive quarter as firms try to keep up with demand and output is expected to rise again in the coming months," she said.

But Ms Armstrong added that inflationary pressures are still acting as a "dark cloud" over the heads of smaller manufacturing companies.

Last month, research by Aviva revealed that more than a fifth of all injuries in the manufacturing industry could be blamed on a slip or a trip.
