Broadband connection 'holding rural businesses back'

Date Added: 27/06/2011

Businesses based in rural areas of the UK may be being outperformed by urban rivals as their broadband connections are not fast enough.

Dr Charles Trotman, head of rural business development for the Country Land and Business Association, stated that everyone has access to the internet, but where they are depends on the speeds they are able to achieve and how expensive it might be.

"You've also got the problem with latency as well - the distance the signal has to travel from the box or satellite dish to the satellite then back again," he said.

Dr Trotman urged the coalition government to stop talking about providing universal fast broadband to businesses and to get on with providing it.

The Forum of Private Business chief executive Phil Orford recently reminded small companies to be aware of rules and regulations relating to copyright when they upload pictures to their websites, as they may be in danger of breaking the law.
