500 jobs lost as curtains firm closes

Date Added: 22/08/2013

Hundreds of workers have lost their jobs as a result of the failure of a curtains company.

Montgomery Tomlinson has made almost 150 members of staff at its Bretton warehouse near Broughton redundant with immediate effect and the employees have been told that they will not be receiving any of their wages for August.

The closure of the firm also means that a further 384 staff at 123 concessions including Debenhams and House of Fraser are losing their jobs as result.

KPMG confirmed that Montgomery Tomlinson ceased trading as soon as it was brought in as the administrator for the firm. Joint administrator Will Wright explained that despite the tireless efforts of the company's directors in the last few weeks to find a buyer for the organisation, none could be found and the firm therefore has to be wound down.

"It has been impossible to find a workable solution to enable the company to continue to trade and they have made the difficult decision to appoint administrators," he said, adding: "As a result of an increasingly competitive marketplace, a fall in sales left Montgomery Tomlinson critically short of cash and unable to meet its liabilities."

Mr Wright also noted that the firm and its administrators will be working as hard as possible to assist employees in their claims to the redundancy payments office.

Staff who have been made redundant as a result of this news have reacted with anger and dismay, pointing out they were not given any warning that their jobs were at risk of being lost.

Speaking to the Chester Standard, Ann Burchell, a part time sewing machinist from Mynydd Isa, stated that it came as a "hell of a shock". She told the newspaper that none of the staff members who have lost their jobs have had time to find new work due to the redundancy notices coming with no prior warning.

"I received a phone call last night at home to find out. It’s a very sad time. We're all shocked, I couldn't believe it," said Ms Burchell, who has worked at the plant for the last 20 years.

Company debt advice can be useful for those firms in a difficult financial situation.
