4,000 pubs 'to shut in next year'

Date Added: 30/08/2013

Thousands of UK pubs could close their doors in the next 12 months, it has been claimed.

According to the Good Pub Guide, as many as 4,000 pubs could go out of business in the coming year, but the organisation warned that the majority of the establishments will deserve their fate.

Editors Alisdair Aird and Fiona Stapley explained that at between 2,500 and 4,000 of the UK's 49,500 pubs, there is an "indifferent" selection of food and drink.

Ms Stapley told Radio 4's Today programme: "A bad pub is one you walk into and there’s no welcome or atmosphere, the beer's poorly kept and the food's rubbish."

Should thousands of pubs go out of business in the next year, this could result in tens of thousands of workers losing their jobs, putting strain on the economy.

Ms Stapley and Mr Aird warned in their introduction to the new Good Pub Guide that many establishments remain stuck in the 1980s and have not moved forward with the times, reports the Daily Mail.

They stressed that while as many as 4,000 pub businesses could be shut down in the coming 12 months, up to 1,000 new venues may open during the course of the same period.

Dawn Hopkins, landlady of two pubs in Norwich - the Ketts Tavern and the Rose - stated that she is appalled by the comments made by the publication's editors.

"Pubs are different things to different people. Yes there are a few rubbish pubs out there but there are very good pubs and publicans who we have lost due to what is happening in the pub industry at the moment," she said.

This report from the Good Pub Guide comes only a short time after it was revealed that Cardiff-based company Beatbox Bars - which ran venues such as Fire Island, Ten Feet Tall and Buffalo - has gone into administration.

WalesOnline reported that HM Revenue and Customs is owed £328,706 by the firm, while other creditors include the Celt Experience, Glamorgan Beers, Otley and Newport brewery Tiny Rebel, the latter of which recently completed a deal for Fire Island.
